Good afternoon. Had to get going early on errands.
Over on the mothership there's an earnest Trump apologist with the handle of lisa something or other making multiple short posts about how much she admires his "strength" and "decisiveness" and stuff. She's not getting any traction, but neither are people jumping all over her. I think most of us realize that would not be effective or helpful. I wonder if she's maybe even having second thoughts she can't admit to herself yet? As for pschneider, haven't seen him much lately. Last posts I saw from him were pretty short. Maybe they've stopped paying by the word.
Think on this, skilled human hunters with a gun..this tiny cat has a 60% kill rate. According to animal biologists, any cat is capable of bringing down prey outweighing itself by 3 times, using just stealth, teeth, claws and skill. Plus, they're soooo cute....
Back from our first thing. After a little paperwork, the next thing will be going to the Scout Shop to get awards for the troop and a bigger shirt for D.
Hey Marque... remember that comment I wrote yesterday that you replied to about HCR's "Letters from an American" reporting that "thousands" of tanks were arriving in D.C. by rail and the email I sent her calling BS on that and cancelling my sub?
Well as it happens, this morning I was going to post about that again somewhere else in a discussion about the media exaggerating the actual facts of certain situations (this one being the situation in L.A. vis a vie the actual level of violence vs the perception generated by the media's sensationalized reporting).
I was going to use that "thousands of tanks" opening line from her post as an example to go with my comment and, since I'd canceled my sub and deleted the article after I sent that email, I went to the website to get a link to the article to authenticate my claim of disingenuous hyperbole. And low and behold, "thousands" of tanks had somehow disappeared in the archived edition!
Good morning. About 66 here and sunny (it poured yesterday afternoon) with highs in the 70s.
Both the mothership and the FP are covering the situation in LA for which Trump has called out the National Guard over Governor Newsom’s protests, and also deployed 700 active duty Marines. The mothership’s account has key details. The protests are confined to 2 local areas - around a federal building complex in northern LA proper, and in the suburb of Paramount. Hardly seems like justification to call out anything. But the Guard and the Marines are, for the moment, simply guarding federal buildings, which does not violate the Posse Comitatus law.
< Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell said in a statement he was confident in the police department’s ability to handle large-scale demonstrations and that the Marines’ arrival without coordinating with the police department would present a “significant logistical and operational challenge” for them. >
The rest of the story does not describe a situation even close to needing the use of now 4000 National Guardsmen and especially those 700 Marines. The last time Marines were serving in a law enforcement / support capacity in an American city was back in '92 during the L.A. riots set off by the Rodney King verdict. And *this* is sure as hell not *that*.
I disagree, the mothership article does not contain key details. The SEIU president will probably be charged with something more than "observing", but gentle readers wouldn't know that from the article. Some editor ate too many "gummies" before that edition came out!
But if you need to know people are angry at Trump, they do provide several quotes.
My point was that the mothership's description was more nuanced that most other media like, say CNN, especially pointing out the protests were not widespread.
I'm not a fan of either the NG nor Marine deployment. Neither were really necessary. But I was a bit relieved to hear they are limiting themselves to Federal buildings, not general crowd control, which (for the active duty Marines and mayvbe for the NG) illegal.
there's a rumor out there that small prey lobbied for the black-footed car not to be classified vulnerable by the IUCN. But it hasn't been verified yet.
Two-and-a-half pounds is quite small, indeed. I’m guessing even small for one of the more diminutive tabby house cats, but I was having a hard time imagining the relative scale.
Interesting how they appear to have the “cat’s eye” pupils like domestic cats have.
Good morning. Another Tiw's Day has arrived. The dog and cat are fine today. We're expecting our son-in-law to bring the baby over today while Drama Queen is being poorly.
Vlad says his toe isn't getting any better with the 4th round of antibiotics. I need to make him a podiatrist appointment, as soon as they open this morning.
If all goes as planned, F and D and I will take baby to a get-together with some of the Envirothon families in the late morning. Then we'll see what else. If we do outings most of the day, she's likely to sleep while driving. Unfortunately for caretakers, her parents have conditioned her to sleep in the dark with both "rain sounds tv" and a noise-machine playing. But she'll fall asleep in the car or in the stroller, if she's tired enough.
The use of white noise machines seems to be a thing with parents of that generation. My grandchildren and Sandra's both sleep to white noise. I. Don't. Get. It.
We happened to be watching YouTube channel on newborns last night, hosted by a pediatrician couple. Among the advice offered, they recommended the noise machine. Us older folks silently remembered we didn't have that and everyone made it. Nor did we have the myriad of equipment for carrying or confining or playing. Some of it would have been really great to have if I'm being honest.
Yeah, but growing up my little sisters and I went to sleep with the soft whir of an old fashioned fan that swept in a semi-circle. Combined with the quiet of my grandparents farm house and the dark green blinds that were pulled down against the late afternoon sun, we napped blissfully. Quiet is a necessity for a lot of people, not just young ones,
and white noise is what works in noisier non-rural areas.
I cannot remember where I saw this story, maybe Adam Tooze? But the storyline was that laws requiring baby seats saved 5000 lives but also led to 50000 fewer births - because having a 3rd child would often require a new larger car, which many can't afford. FWIW - with that stat, I'd lean into saving lives that do exist rather than those that might have.
I'm sure I have the stats wrong, and don't know the time frame, but that's the gist of it. We've already had a challenge at my daughters home this week because both cars have a child car seat, limiting adults to 3 seats when we needed more. Removing the car seat is a chore I'm told.
Yes, that's the impression I have. I was reading an article recently where the author was talking about a power outage, and she wrote, "My kids woke up when their sound machines turned off." It sounds like a really dysfunctional way to go through life.
Over-eager. The "sleep problem" was "being a baby." Oh, also red-scale lights, instead of regular. And an unusually low temperature. They say it's "too hot" in our house (78 in the day during the summer).

pschneider is usually commenting on Kevin Williamson columns.
Ah, hadn't noticed that--or if I did, I forgot.
Not just a cat. A cutie-pie of a cat.
P.S. From the front, they look almost like they're wearing prison stripes! But from any other angle, no.

Excellent info!

Today, on a whim, I put "TAFFY" into Wordle.
Sometimes whims work out.
Well done!
I got to the point of entering "tabby" but got hit by that whim thing, too.
Summer treats!
It was on try #2, so it wasn't a miracle, but #2 is pretty good. I actually had a first try success...TRIAL. That was a couple years ago.
Try # 2 is pretty good.

I guess the simple explanation is that they all got diverted to L.A.

Agent Krasnov trying to inflame things, as usual. Only 42 more months of this to go…
Trump's not smart enough to be an agent. The technical tradecraft term is "reliable dupe".
> The black-footed cat is classed as “vulnerable” by IUCN. <
…not to mention the people watching them.
there's a rumor out there that small prey lobbied for the black-footed car not to be classified vulnerable by the IUCN. But it hasn't been verified yet.
They're so tiny. Smaller than any cat we've ever had! I think Beau's cat is about that size. She's an excellent killer, too.
Cute little cats. cuter than those "fat cats" you often post about. 🙂
Two-and-a-half pounds is quite small, indeed. I’m guessing even small for one of the more diminutive tabby house cats, but I was having a hard time imagining the relative scale.

5-1/2 lbs is a big one. That's about the size of Beau's Little Kitty.
ADD defect on my end. Five-and-a-half pounds is also not very big. Although I just bought five pounds of hamburger meat. None of which is fur.

That toe is worrisome.
Yes, it is. It doesn't get worse: it just doesn't ever get better.
“Drama Queen is being poorly?” Have fun with the baby today. 🙂
Thanks. Drama Queen comes down with things rather often.
Morning! Enjoy the granddaughter. Sorry about Vlad’s foot problems…

Enjoy the day, and have fun! Hopefully the grandlittle will sleep.
Every time I've ever been around a white noise machine (2-3 times), I can't sleep. All I can think about is the noise keeping me awake.
A truly humorous scene is a camper in a tent with a portable sound machine.
I've been on campouts where people are doing that.
My crutch is a Buff for a blindfold. I have to have one every night even at home. There are worse addictions.
The use of white noise machines seems to be a thing with parents of that generation. My grandchildren and Sandra's both sleep to white noise. I. Don't. Get. It.
I struggle with buckling a dang stroller clip. It’s a lot more complicated these days.

Baby monitors and really snazzy car seats.

Yup.
In my day, they gave us shots of whiskey to put us to sleep. And we turned out JUST FINE!
Really? Who says so?
I'll drink to that!
I would think sleep would be easy. She’s less than 6 months, no?
7 months. And no, it's not easy.
Were they using the grey noise aids to solve a sleep problem? Or were they being a bit overeager with the procedure?
Over-eager. The "sleep problem" was "being a baby." Oh, also red-scale lights, instead of regular. And an unusually low temperature. They say it's "too hot" in our house (78 in the day during the summer).
