Back from the town's Memorial Day observance at the VFW hall. I hadn't been there since my friend Rafaela's daughter had her Quinceanera there, maybe 12 years ago? They've rehabbed the building since then.

The mayor spoke, and the leaders of the American Legion and the VFW. It was very nice. I met Fang's boss, head of the Park Department. He said Fang's an excellent employee.

Is Fang 19 or 21? At his age, he's simply immature, and there's a good chance it will come to him. I see this in college a lot: these kids are slower to mature than prior generations. There's a good chance he'll figure it out.

Interestingly, my daughter used to date a guy is who is now 25 years old. He works part time in a nursing home washing dishes. He was offered a chance to move into the kitchen, he declined. I have a friend who owns an HVAC business. He met the guy, and offered him a paid apprenticeship. 18 months and the kid would be earning $50k a year. And he not only declined it, he laughed at the job, said it was beneath him. I apologized to my friend, told him I didn't expect that. He told me he hears that a lot. He also said in five years, the kid will have no future.

Good news! My 22yo niece took my advice! Her local hospital has a training program for working in the hospital, and she signed up for it. Two months into it (3 months long then a one month "externship) and she likes it. Plus she's pretty much guaranteed a job there when she finishes. Plus as part of her training she visits different jobs (which require additional training) and if she works there a year the hospital will help her train for it (if they have a need for that job). She actually thanked me for encouraging her to do it! 6 months ago she was dating a loser, and finally left him. She is doing so much better now!

Fang is 21. (Vlad is 19: he's the one going to be an accountant.)

Fang doesn't think work is beneath him, or he couldn't succeed as a bro of all work at the Parks Department. He just doesn't want to make the effort to do anything else.

Good news about your niece. There's so much work in the medical care field. In The Villages, where my parents lived, the nursing companies were always offering employees the chance to take additional paid training and improve their qualifications.

That Fang has a good work ethic will help him tremendously.

Good morning. It's sunny here, but still chilly. I won't grill outside; I'll broil me a burger later on. Already put some flags out on my porches.

It's kind of paradoxical, this "should we say Happy Memorial Day?" thing. Some solemnity is proper. But one may ask oneself, what about America loomed large in the minds of those who were prepared to give their all for America and what it represents? This vision of civilians exercising the fruits of our precious freedom had to have included families enjoying cookouts, parades, festivals, games, recreation of all kinds. So take time today to appreciate the sacrifice of those who didn't come back, but also appreciate and enjoy what they died to preserve, because I think that's what they would want.

I think saying Happy Memorial Day is appropriate. We celebrate the good of those who did not die in vain.

When I think of my father (WW II and Korea vet), he'd want a slice of pie today. What flavor? He felt there were only two good flavors of pie: hot 'n cold. He'd go to the parades and smile. When I was in a parade he bought candy for us to give out to kids. He didn't go to the cemeteries, for personal reasons, which I respect.

I went to Walnut Ridge on Saturday, cleaning family headstones, and reciting the vows I wrote for Pam that we didn't get to use because Grandpa Harry couldn't remember them (his wife warned us it'd be 50/50 if he remembered anything we requested it ceremony). I left her a single red rose. Walnut Ridge was one of Pam's favorite places, so it is good she is there.

Pam is buried next to Harry and Thelma. Immediately behind her are Harry's parents and next to Harry's parents are Thelma's parents. I told my oldest if they ever have kids, if they have a girl, his great-great grandmother's name, Cora, would be lovely. On my side, my grand mother's name would be charming as well; Lena Evadean. He likes Cora, but I have no clue what his wife thinks.

Good morning. 46 degrees here and sunny, possibly getting into the low 70s. The pools are open but I doubt many will go swimming today.

Both the mothership and the FP offer articles on Memorial Day. The mothership represents a 1986 speech by Ronald Reagan, the greatest President of my lifetime, at Arlington Cemetery. The FP offers a set of tributes.

We visited the cemetery where several of my family members including my father, a WWII veteran were buried. The cemetery is an old one, Some of the tombstones sporting US flags were likely of Civil War veterans.

However you choose to do so, remember those who served our country.

This is a Chesterton fence-y observation: if you don’t know why there’s a particular step in a process, don’t leave it out until you understand its purpose!

It wasn't until I was an adult that I learned that Baking Powder and Baking Soda are not substitutes for each other, and actually act in opposite ways of each other.
