MG: Battling sexes
Rob Henderson presents a theory for the observed behavioral differences between boys a girls:
[T]he male-warrior hypothesis expresses itself in modern contexts. In a recent study of college and high school athletes, males were more likely than females to say that they had been the recipient of overt aggression (verbal or physical; name calling, fist fights, and so on) from one of their teammates.
In contrast, females were more likely to say they had been the recipients of indirect aggression (e.g., social exclusion; “wouldn’t pass me the ball during the game,” “teammates went to a restaurant without telling me,” and so on). Unsurprisingly, males were more likely to say that the aggression they received was physical, whereas females were more likely to report that the aggression they experienced was verbal.
Per Tyler Cowen’s dictum, read the whole thing.
Henderson includes summaries of observational research done on our closest living primate relatives—chimps—and describes the anthropology of (human) hunter-gatherer societies.
Henderson describes theories about male humans, but not females. Perhaps he decided not to be accused of man-splaining.
An even longer treatment of the sex differences that includes women was in Joyce Benenson’s Warriors and Worriers: The Survival of the Sexes. It is an interesting quick read—I tend to find a book a quick read if my interested is piqued by the subject matter, assuming a competent author.
Benenson explains how women and girls have been observed to behave across cultures that is distinct from how men and boys behave. She woman-splains the differences and presents the hypotheses as to the evolutionary processes that led to them.
But as a man who self-identifies as a man (my pronouns are “he” and “heeheeheehee”) I have to wonder: Who’s the winner here? I mean the real winner? Will we need a duel to settle things?
Also, the stuff he does with his buddy Carson is great. Try victory bells. And 19 and Aimless.
Today gas here in NE Ohio was $3.30 a gallon ( $3.20 if you have a Circle K Easy Pay card). That is lowest it has been since the gas issue started...I find that to be great/hopeful news.
Oh, PS: For what it is worth, I would rather someone call me by my first name or nickname than a pronoun...lol...though I hate labels and don't sue MS or Miss or aunt etc either
And Good Morning everyone...TGIF
