Before the United Kingdom joined the European Union (or, its predecessor, the European Common Market), there was debate about the value of this move in contrast to keeping intact the British Commonwealth with former British colonies. Prime Minister Clement Attlee, who succeeded Churchill at the end of World War II, argued against joining the Common Market as it provided a less diverse set of allies than that of the disintegrating British Empire, which had been spread farther around the world.
