For most of our ancestors and in much of the world, considering this day to be the beginning of a new year is completely arbitrary, not marked by any celestial events transpiring in the heavens. But it does get all the publicity—even if civilization were to collapse and we started having to figure out calendar time by watching phases of the moon and other such things.
How do you plan to keep track of time when civilization collapses?
It’s not that I encourage my readers to engage in doomsday prepping, but maybe it’s something to do on an exhaustion-based holiday.
Or not…
I was re-reading Charles Dickens over the break, and yes, that included "A Christmas Carol". I remember after he awoke, giving the young boy money to buy a goose to feed people with.
It reminded me that even back then, retail had to work on holidays! 🤦♂️ Yes, Katie is at work today.
I don't do doomsday prepping but I do have a recommendation. Fill an empty milk crate with goods to get you through a weather crisis (e.g. snowstorm). You laugh, but remember toilet paper! Once the worst of the season is through (for us, by Easter), I empty the milk crate at a food pantry.
