For just a little AI fun, today a recommendation from our friend Anne.
National Review’s Charlie Cooke (Charles C.W. Cooke) spoke with tech reporter (and early internet guru) Tim Berners Lee about what artificial intelligence has in store for us.
In general, Lee is much less excitable than so many others on the subject matter. He is certainly far from the worrywarts who think the technology leads to human extinction by AI volition.
If there is one warning note from Lee that sounds sensible rather than alarmist, it lies in the ability of AI security systems to identify people from photos or video surveillance, allowing anyone to be singled out for public harassment in their private lives for offending others online. The surveillance systems are the ones that are made for the specific task, and most of the technology has been developed by authoritarian police states like the Chinese government for citizen control.
The potential concern here is this identification technology could be used for intrusive population control. The facial and trait recognition could effectively stalk individuals everywhere in a panopticon society, making viewpoint bullying everywhere and at all times a real possibility.
The scary prospect is for the tech to escape oppressive regimes like that of the CCP in China to rank citizens by loyalty and conformity in all aspects of behavior and thought.
Thanks, Mark. You tried! ❤️
Good afternoon. Anyone interested has probably seen that the mothership posted an update on Gaza and how the IDF has discovered extensive Hamas tunnels, including a Hamas commend center under the UN relief agency UNRWA's headquarters.
