“Government” is just another word for the things we do together, I’ve heard said. The things I like doing together include complaining on the internet and mongering fear, I suppose. When I think of “government,” for instance, I want to complain that it is a perpetual and exhausting frustration over which I have no control.
It’s a bit dark, I know. But the days will soon start getting longer…leaving more time to worry about coming conflict!
I'm continuing to make my way through Liz's book. McCarthy, continuing to be a two-faced liar, has gone to Mar-a-Lago to kiss the ring. See, the reason he needed to do that was because he lacks any policy knowledge or leadership ability. All he could do was raise funds, and Trump was his only path to being able to continue to do that. Kevin even sent out a fundraising solicitation while he was there. So it was only about money and power for Kevin. "Some of my colleagues had been very angry about the solicitation, concluding that Kevin had sold them out." Ya think? Meanwhile many others in the GOP are backing down from their initial resolve about Jan. 6. Talk was cheap.
Here's one of my favorites. Liz was hearing from representatives who were upset because their constituents wanted to know why they hadn't voted to impeach, which made them look bad because Liz had voted to impeach. Among them was Elise Stefanik. "She told me that, because of my vote to impeach, people were writing letters to the editors of her local papers criticizing her and asking why she hadn't taken the same 'principled' stand I had. That seemed less my problem than hers. Many of us who had known Elise since before she abandoned all principle were curious about how she had lost her sense of right and wrong."
Which reminds me: Steve and Jonah were mentioned:
"When Patriot Purge ran despite the internal objections, two respected conservatives--Fox News contributors Steve Hayes and Jonah Goldberg--resigned in protest. Fox was willing to run a show spreading incendiary and false conspiracy theories, but it never ran the program debunking Trump's election lies."
Meanwhile Liz is getting lectured by those who are about to remove her as conference chair. They don't like her "tone," her "attitude." One guy accuses her of "not riding for the brand." That's a cowboy thing. "'John,' I reminded him, 'our "brand" is the US Constitution.'"

Here's an interesting piece from NR about a study of the origins (which Mexican state) of Mexicans who come to the United States. This is the report from the source:
https://www.texaspolicy.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Mexican-Migration-Project.pdf
According to NR, the thesis of the study was that origin could help to explain different cultures among Mexicans in the United States. It looks like all they've done so far is determine that there are, in the destination states (Georgia, Texas, California, etc.) pretty strong concentrations of source states. Sociological rather than statistical research would be needed to draw more than very general conclusions (more/less rural, more/less education) about what the different subgroups are like.
I applaud the Texas Public Policy Foundation for recognizing the diversity of Mexicans. Mexicans themselves certainly do!
