Danish Park
In keeping with this blog’s tradition of ignoring major holidays…Oops!
We can still rescue this. We just won’t focus on the holiday everyone else is thinking about. Instead, we’ll celebrate the 111th annual Rebild Celebrations of Danish-American friendship held on this date at Rebild National Park, outside the village of Rebild in North Jutland. It is said to be the largest 4th of July celebration outside the United States.
Rebild National Park was founded in 1911 by Danish-American Dr. Max Henius on 200 acres of land he purchased for the purpose. It appears to be the oldest national park in Denmark, although—rather oddly—it is not included in the country’s official national parks as designated in law.
At any rate, consider raising a danish in celebration of Danish-American friendship today. I mean, what else is there to do?
Daughter D phoned from camp with a whininess. She got a pep talk from me, her dad, Daughter C, and C's boyfriend, and a reminder to ask her leaders or the camp staff about something for sunburn. She didn't think she would need it, but oh, well.
Yeah, it's hot and buggy in central South Carolina in July, but she'll make it. Last year at Webelos camp, when all the men and boys were whining, we females (two girls and me) practiced "breathe in cool, breathe out heat" and were in excellent shape. Maybe I need to offer the Girl Boy Scouts troop some biofeedback training and Pep Talk Skills, so they can encourage the first-year Scouts more effectively.
Just got done boiling shrimp and making cocktail sauce (mother-in-law's birthday dinner request). She was actually born on July 5th, as was her mother, but we're celebrating today.
Not sure how someone who grew up in Pittsburgh was chosen to handle the coastal cooking chores. I hope she has a happy birthday anyway!
