Mornin' all. We have hurricane weather here. The local news is so hyped with fear they put emojis in their weather headline.

Weather, politics and personal life anxieties whipped up one heck of a weird dream this morning.

I should probably go to the store, just in case. We need milk.

be safe! If it permits a note here and there letting us know you're okay would be good.

Morning all. It's off to a mid-80s day today in the middle of Middle Tennessee. Which beats yesterday.

Went out for live music last night at Eastside Bowling Alley. About 800 in the audience. Hotter than socks on a rooster. This young lady, who's been my earbug du jour off and on for a few weeks:

Maybe I can shake it now. But I wouldn't bet a dollar on it.

Hotter than socks on a rooster? The ambient temperature of the venue, or the performance? I've seen a lot of bands and singers perform in a lot of places, but not in a bowling alley. Seems like the sounds of pins being scattered by all those heartily heaved heavy round objects would detract from the musical ambience a bit...

BTW... You got a book of similarly cool Middle Tennessee-isms I might peruse?

Of interest, considering yesterday's eau de cannabis, may be some eau de canine...

Or maybe not. Who nose?

Sorry not sorry. 👃

With regard to pup perfume, I can see the value in that. Especially for the one Lisa Douglas had on Park Avenue, dahling. I've got a spaniel who I'm going to dip in the river in a few minutes. I don't know if it will help, but it won't hurt. He smells like a dog right now.

Re: Hotter than socks on a rooster? The ambient temperature of the venue, or the performance?

Yes! it had to be 85 degrees in that *joint, a separate venue from the actual bowling alley portion of the building. And they've got a dance floor up front which was full to the gills. But there was a mist machine hitting the band and the dancers. The beer was flowing, and there was free ice water. And Sierra Ferrell rocked the joint, doing a mixture of her own songs and covers of "San Antonio Rose" and "Crazy Arms." (Generally, I suggest that singers leave alone anything sung by Patsy Cline. But the soulful Sierra pulled them off beautifully. And half of her audience would have said, "Patsy who?" anyway.)

With regard to the socks/rooster idiom, that seems to have variations from all over the South, the Google machine tells me. I ran across it in an odd way recently in another tune that I like, "Jersey Giant," a particularly chunky type of chicken. https://youtu.be/DOLM4PRRq3E?si=WXveMqCHsHhiZLBL

*-- The Eastside Bowl is a fun retro place in suburban Nashvegas. It's probably too hip for me, but what do I care? There is another stage near the actual bowling lanes. I figure they're making more money off Nashville singers hunting a stage than the pins. Take a look, if you like: https://eastsidebowl.com/the-lounge/

Interesting looking place. I don't think it would be too hip for me. Rather, I'd probably be too unhip for it. But I've been thrown out of worse places, I expect, since it doesn't appear they have a cage around the band area.

Here’s another crooner crowing about gallus domesticus:

M. Trosino's avatar

Has all this chicken business got something to do with the fowl weather you said might be blowing in down there tonight?

M. Trosino's avatar

Well, gee. No point in Grousing about it. Maybe it won't get too unPheasant.

M. Trosino's avatar

If anyone other than Asleep at the Wheel had tried this, they probably would've laid an egg.

Honkey Tonk Tuesdays has dance lessons at 7 p.m. and live music from 8 p.m.-1:30 a.m. With a $10 cover and an overflow crowd, I suspect they're doing just fine. Lots of talented singers/musicians hunting work around here.

Good morning. It’s the last day of our road trip, we should be home by mid-afternoon. I’ve been through the American west many times but never cease to be amazed by it. We’ve seen Colorado, and parts of Utah and New Mexico, and of course MANY miles of Texas. The wide open spaces and varied terrain are outstanding.

As Jay pointed out, I’m afraid our future selves are going to look down on our current fear of escalation. Is it any wonder Iran keeps getting bolder? They must be laughing at The Great (but gutless) Satan.

LucyTrice's avatar

"MANY miles of Texas" lit a memory that sent me to this from Country Gazette. Wrong song but same idea as "Miles and miles of Texas": "You Can't Get the Hell Out of Texas"

In 100 years, Obama's blindness towards Iran will be painfully apparent to sober historians.

Last night was "neighbor's night out", a police-friendly get together. Our neighbor who created a Tiki bar in his back yard (yes, it is that bad) hosted it, we had an outdoor potluck. Best dessert, S'mores (it was awesome and messy, to my wife's chagrin). We had a dozen there (it was too hot for several to attend, last year we had 18). Or perhaps they were traumatized by the Tiki Bar? Our youngest went to play golf, and our daughter had to work.

The police chief stopped by, he and I serve on the local YMCA advisory board together. The police had discussed how they know so many in the community from having had to arrest them. Apparently a majority thank them for helping them turn their lives around. So during introductions, when it came to me, the chief smiled, indicating he knew me already. So I quipped "But not from being arrested"! Katie added "is it still an arrest if it has been expunged"?

A major storm hit late last night, knocking power out in parts of Dayton, although it is back up now.

Sounds like a good time was had by all.

I had a day’s internet outage at home yesterday. No cause given. There was no bad weather present.

Maybe someone was guiding you outside to enjoy the fresh air....Well, that or comcast is your service provider....

As they might say at the German barbershop: Herr-razing!

Unlike cheese on sausage, this isn’t a Wurst-Käs’ scenario.

Good morning 🌄. I've been watching the valley fill up with fog. Anyone who has to drive to work this morning won't be able to see.

IncognitoG's avatar

It’s just muggy here, with high fog for now. Our chance of hurricane-related weather comes tonight in the elevated chance of thunderstorms.

M. Trosino's avatar

Those darned hurricanes always bring their relatives with them uninvited.

I’m old enough to remember brer Himicane back in the 70s, now you mention.

LucyTrice's avatar

Maybe Agnes? Terrible storm, did a lot of damage in Johnstown, PA. But The Seldom Scene's Phil Rosenthal wrought a great song out of it, Muddy Water:

Nice one!

What I had in mind was that 5-day media thrill in the Carter administration when—in the name of equal rights—the national weather service was going to stop giving “Her-icanes” girl names, but also use boy names for “Him-icanes” on an alternating basis. One small step for wo/man…and all that jazz.

I seem to have a selective memory for the arcane.

LucyTrice's avatar

I do remember himi-icanes. It took a long time for me to get used to using boy's names. It just seemed wrong. It doesn't any more.

I frequently get blank stares for odd things I remember. My family finds them more disturbing than amusing, sadly.

M. Trosino's avatar

Ouch. I think I need some lidocaine, now that you mentioned that one. 😬

Phil H's avatar

Good morning. (First, again?) Cooler and cloudy here today, after rain last night.

The mothership and the FP are both covering the same story. The FP headline reads simply, “Who is Tim Walz?”

M. Trosino's avatar

He seems to come off as the guy down the street who, if you could avoid the subject of politics, you might not mind buying a beer.

Wilhelm's avatar

I was listening to 2Way this morning and Eleanor Clift was on. She was baffled why anyone would think any of Walz's positions were to the left. Like Pauline Kale, I bet she was baffled by how Nixon was elected too. Fish, wet, all that.

Phil H's avatar

Not surprised. Eleanor Clift is best known for having anchored the Left side of the panel on John McLaughlin's long running commentary TV show.

Wilhelm's avatar

I recall. She seemed confused by half the nation (or more) even then.

I was startled to see how old she has gotten. But then I remembered how old I've gotten, and, well ... this is a recurring theme in my life.

IncognitoG's avatar

She might have felt perfectly at home in The Nation.

Morning. He seems more like a conventional pol, even if his past is more of the progressive stripe. He makes sense as a non-competing running mate. Seems like a more conventional pick, without too many over-promised upsides.
