I confess that I am temperamentally ready to begin ranting about something political at the drop of a hat. The less time I have to slow things down, the more likely I am to let the rants get away from me. It’s the recurring peril of running late on the blog posts.
It’s also times like those when I find music quite helpful. It’s a distraction, and it’s often, but not always, a calming one. This fact is a reminder that far-away events in national and international politics aren’t worth obsessing over: the obsessing achieves nothing of any durable practical value. The music works like a mental detox of sorts.
Ho-hum.
That’s a lot of wordage to introduce a TMBG song “Dinner Bell” from their Apollo 18 album:
This fits my mood because my own Pavlovian reflex is to read political news and salivate at the prospect of an extended rant. Yeah, that’s probably it.
Fun trivia: the passage in the lyrics that’s hardest to understand lists the parts of the human hand and arm. It was sung backwards for the recording and replayed in reverse, ie, forwards.

Good morning. Nice squid!
Also, I'm fond of a rant, too, to the point of shorthanding them with [standard school rant] and similar notations. I also do this in real life, saying, "My standard laundry rant!"
A key to preventing the political rant - which accomplishes nothing, as you observe - is to avoid the triggers.
