Killing Eve: a short review.
If you like a spy thriller with very good writing and acting, and you enjoy gratuitous violence, the four-season series is well worth streaming. I happened to see it on AcornTV, but it has been on BBC America.
The premise is that an international assassin known as Villanelle, played superbly by Jodie Comer, is murdering her way across the globe, possibly having gone rogue from her sponsors. Sandra Oh plays Eve Polastri, her counterpart in the British spy community, tasked with following Villanelle, which becomes her personal obsession.
Comer’s skillful acting—especially in using different accents—is hard to overstate. She was almost passed over for another role by a director who saw her playing Villanelle in character with the Russian accent—and assumed the Liverpool-raised actress didn’t speak British English as a native.
The four seasons (“series” as the Brits call them) each run for eight 45-minute episodes, and each season was written by a different team of writers, which for me as a fan kept the series reasonably fresh through its run. It was generally very well received when it was first broadcast in the UK between 2018 and 2022, but critical reviewers found the story varied too much from season to season due to different writing teams, losing sight of the main storyline. I disagree with the critics here, since I think the writers were mainly focused on maintaining a lively entertainment. If the show has a deeper heritage, it would be in the Tarantino tradition of stylized violence that is shocking and intentionally humorous, often implausible, even beyond the irreality of action stories.
Five out of five daggers.
Katie is busy getting ready for the quilt retreat. She vacuumed out her Rogue (vehicle, not me), washed the floor mats, and took it through a car wash. She is busy crating and packing supplies, so she'll be ready to go in the morning. She's gonna drive to Indy to meet her sister, hang out all day, then when her best friend gets off work they'll drive up to Quaker Haven for the retreat.
My MIL Janet is going to the quilt retreat, along with my SIL, her daughter, and a cousin. Janet fell Sunday, getting 16 stitches in her knee (Ouch!). I visited, and told Katie she seems in good spirits. Katie laughed "In 26 years, I've never seen her not in good spirits, is she ever not in a good mood". Well, besides the death of loved ones, she seems in a good mood all the time. I asked Katie if she wanted me to pack some deviled eggs for Janet, 🙄 Katie said no, take her some the following week.
My last trip to Italy, I packed about an hour before I was supposed to leave for the airport. Did I ever mention she and I are very different in many ways?
